Finding CONTENTMENT
WAS THIS THE TRUE MEANING OF LEGACY?
Although Helen Keller had multiple physical achievements one of her greatest achievements was not physical, instead it was a psychological achievement. Helen Keller was one of the only historical figures that achieved the most success through emotion and happiness. Helen Keller’s life thoroughly demonstrated that happiness is not only perceived from the eye, though it is perceived through the mind. The five senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch) are not a gift to which they bring happiness, for it spoon feeds happiness to the mouth. One who has perseverance in hope even after a loss of those senses and still being able to find happiness is what demonstrates succession and contentment. It is the sixth sense that is overlooked; the sense which gives you the ability to perceive yourself from the outside. Helen Keller was able to bring upon the fact that you don’t need to see the big things you achieve or hear the applause; it is simply the knowledge that you’ve achieved what you yearned for which gives you life's satisfaction. This revolves around the idea of communication because Helen Keller used the means of looking outward when it came to finding ways to interact with the people around her. Most people with disabilities were frowned upon for not being able to communicate “like an individual should” and are still frowned upon today. In fact the term “dumb” was often used as a derogatory term to describe the deaf and the blind. After learning about Helen Keller’s journey, it is evident that one who is at lack of something is not necessarily “dumb” by any means, it means that the person has a more meritable journey to happiness. Helen was actually one of the most intelligent people of her time solely because she was able to adapt to what was around her, regardless of her negative surroundings. It takes a lot to find light in the dark, and Helen Keller was able to do just that while inspiring people along the way to do the same.
